CLEFT SURGERY

MORE THAN 170,000 CHILDREN ACROSS THE WORLD ARE BORN WITH CLEFT LIPS OR PALATES EVERY YEAR.

While cleft lips and palates are fairly simple and straightforward to treat in the Western world, in some parts of the developing world, this condition can be much more problematic. In certain areas of the world, cleft lips can be a major issue. More than one million children in the developing world are left to suffer from untreated clefts.

Untreated clefts can lead to a number of physical health problems, which include dental problems, speech and language difficulties, and an increased risk of ear infections and hearing problems or even hearing loss, to name just a few. In addition, vulnerable babies in developing countries who are born with cleft lips or palates are at an increased risk of being susceptible to social exclusion and prejudice. When compared to their peers, people with cleft lips and palates are less likely to gain a proper education, keep a job, or even get married.

CLEFT LIP SURGERY IN PAKISTAN

After China, India, and Indonesia, the greatest number of cleft-lip patients occur in Pakistan.

Every year, 10,000 Pakistani babies are born with a cleft lip or palate. Of that number, just 2,500 children undergo cleft lip surgery in government hospitals. This means that a staggering 7,500 children are left to suffer from the long-lasting effects of cleft lips and palates.

The primary reason why so many Pakistani children do not have the surgery they need is insufficient amenities. A lack of funding, as well as essential medical supplies, is partly to blame, and the fact that many of these children live in remote, isolated communities only exacerbates the issue. With so many vulnerable children left to suffer from the ongoing effects of untreated cleft lips and palates, it is time for every Pakistani child to be able to access the life-changing surgery they deserve.

Here at Al Mustafa Welfare Trust, we are fully committed to providing all the necessary healthcare and support to babies, children, and adults who are suffering from the ongoing effects of cleft lips and palates. Your generous donations can help us to provide life-changing surgery for young children born with the condition, ensuring a better quality of life and a brighter, more hopeful future.

A donation of just £200 will fund cleft surgery for one child.
